# Gaming Monitor vs Projector in 2026: Which Should You Buy?

This argument usually opens with an assumption that turns out to be wrong: that a projector is more immersive because the image is bigger.

Immersion isn’t about screen size. It’s about how much of your field of view the image fills — and that depends on distance as much as diagonal.

Run the numbers and something surprising falls out.

## The field of view maths

A 27-inch 16:9 monitor is 23.5 inches wide. Sit two feet away and it spans roughly **52 degrees** of your horizontal field of view.

A 100-inch 16:9 screen is 87 inches wide. Sit eight feet back on a sofa and it spans roughly **49 degrees**.

The monitor wins.

A desk setup at normal distance fills more of your vision than a hundred-inch projected image from across the room, because you sit four times closer to it.

That doesn’t make projectors pointless. It means the comparison isn’t the one most people think they’re making. You’re not choosing between small and large — you’re choosing between a desk display and a room display. Different jobs entirely.

## Two specs that get conflated constantly

Here’s a comparison you’ll see made all the time, and shouldn’t trust: “this monitor has 0.03ms response time, this projector has 1ms input lag, so the monitor is 33 times faster.”

Those measure completely different things.

**Response time** is how fast a pixel changes from one colour to another. QD-OLED panels hit 0.03ms, and LG showed one at 0.02ms at CES 2026. This determines motion blur and ghosting.

**Input lag** is the delay between your input and the display reacting — signal processing, not pixel physics. Projectors quoting 1ms or 4ms are quoting this.

Both matter. Neither is interchangeable. A projector with 1ms input lag still has DLP micromirror switching to account for, and a 0.03ms monitor still has its own processing delay.

Compare like with like, or you’ll reach the wrong conclusion very confidently.

## Where gaming monitors win

**Refresh rate.** Not close. Competitive 1080p monitors run 480Hz and 540Hz, and LG unveiled a 720Hz OLED panel at CES 2026. The fastest projectors reach 240Hz — and only at 1080p. Play ranked shooters? This alone settles it.

**Motion clarity.** OLED response times basically eliminate ghosting. No projection technology matches per-pixel emissive switching.

**Brightness and HDR.** LG’s 2026 gaming OLEDs hit 1,500 nits peak with HDR True Black 500. A projector spreads a few thousand lumens across 100+ inches, which is fundamentally dimmer. HDR highlights on a monitor are in another class.

**Contrast.** OLED switches pixels fully off for true black. A projector can’t make your screen darker than the room, so black is always dark grey.

**Price collapsed.** 4K 240Hz QD-OLED used to sit above $1,500. In 2026 a 27-inch runs around $650, and 32-inch versions have dipped under $900.

**It works in daylight.** No curtains, no room prep, no compromise.

## Where projectors win

**Couch and console gaming.** Playing with a controller from a sofa? A desk monitor is the wrong tool. At eight to twelve feet, a projector at 120 inches or more genuinely does fill your vision in a way a 27-inch panel can’t.

**Genuinely large images.** Above about 110 inches, projection is the only realistic option at consumer prices. For single-player cinematic games, that scale is the whole point.

**Shared play.** Split-screen, party games, people watching. A monitor serves one person well and everybody else badly.

**No burn-in.** OLED monitors can retain static elements, and game HUDs are exactly that — health bars, minimaps, ammo counters sitting in fixed positions for hours. Manufacturers mitigate it and offer three-year burn-in warranties, which tells you the risk is real enough to insure against. Projectors have no equivalent failure mode.

**Cost per inch at scale.** A capable gaming projector at $1,699 delivers 120 inches. No monitor approaches that at any price.

**It disappears.** No permanent screen dominating the room.

## So which do you buy?

**Buy a gaming monitor if** you play competitively, sit at a desk, use mouse and keyboard, game during the day, care about HDR, or mostly play solo. For ranked shooters this isn’t close — refresh rate and motion clarity decide fights, and no projector competes.

**Buy a projector if** you play with a controller from a sofa, favour single-player and cinematic titles, play with other people in the room, can darken the space, and want an image beyond 110 inches. **Honestly? A lot of people end up with both.** Monitor at the desk for competitive play and work, projector in the living room for controller games and films. With a 4K 240Hz OLED at around $650, that combination is less extravagant than it used to be.

## If you go the projector route

Three things matter more than the headline specs.

**Check for HDMI 2.1, not just the refresh claim.** 4K at 120Hz needs roughly 40Gbps. HDMI 2.0 caps at 18Gbps, so a projector with 2.0 ports will accept the signal and silently downscale it.

**Check which resolution the input lag refers to.** A projector advertising 4ms is usually quoting 1080p at 240Hz. That same unit at 4K 60Hz might be four times slower.

**Budget for a screen.** In any room with ambient light, an ALR screen does more for the picture than upgrading the projector.
