# Projector Screen Size Guide 2026: Distance, Math and Charts

There’s a right screen size for your room. It’s a calculation, not a guess.

Get it wrong one way and the image feels small and underwhelming. Wrong the other way and you’re turning your head to follow the action — which stops being fun about twenty minutes in.

Here’s the maths the professionals use, already solved. No trigonometry required from you.

## One number decides everything

Screen size isn’t chosen in isolation. It’s chosen relative to **how far you sit from it**.

The same 120-inch image is spectacular in one room and unwatchable in another, purely because of seating distance.

The industry measures this as **viewing angle** — how much of your horizontal field of view the screen fills. Two standards set the targets, both from bodies that write professional cinema specs.

## SMPTE vs THX

**SMPTE** (Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers) recommends a **30-degree** viewing angle. That’s the comfortable, relaxed target — good for sport, gaming, general TV, and rooms where not everyone sits dead centre.

**THX** recommends a wider **36 to 40 degrees** for a more immersive, cinema-like feel. That’s the “wow” target for dedicated movie rooms — it matches the back row of a commercial THX-certified cinema.

Neither is more correct. SMPTE prioritises comfort, THX prioritises immersion. Which you want depends on your room and what you watch in it.

## The formulas, already solved

Take your seating distance in inches and multiply:

| THX | 36° | distance × 0.84 | Immersive home cinema |

**Worked example.** You sit 10 feet back. That’s 120 inches.

- SMPTE (comfortable): 120 × 0.625 = **75-inch** diagonal
- THX (immersive): 120 × 0.84 = **101-inch** diagonal

So at ten feet, anything from about 75 to 100 inches is defensible. Below 75 feels small. Above 100 starts demanding head movement.

Most people land happiest in the middle — a 100-inch screen at ten feet is the single most common sweet spot, sitting just inside the THX target.

## Screen size by seating distance

Find your row. Read it off.

The gap between those two columns is your comfortable band. Lean toward SMPTE for a family room with wide seating, toward THX for a dedicated cinema where everyone faces forward.

## Diagonal to actual dimensions

Screens are sold by diagonal. Rooms are constrained by width and height. For 16:9:

- **Width** = diagonal × 0.872
- **Height** = diagonal × 0.49

So a 100-inch 16:9 screen is 87 inches wide and 49 tall. Add frame allowance, and check it physically fits your wall before ordering.

That’s the step people skip. And regret.

## How resolution changes the answer

Viewing angle sets the comfortable size. Resolution sets how *close* you can sit before the image falls apart into visible pixels.

**1080p** looks clean at SMPTE distances and further back. Sit closer than that on a big screen and you’ll start seeing structure. Which is why 1080p pairs naturally with the comfortable target rather than the immersive one.

**4K** holds up at THX distances and closer. Those extra pixels are exactly what let you sit near a large screen without pixelation — which is why 4K becomes worth it above roughly 80 inches at immersive distances.

## Getting the height right

Size isn’t the only dimension that matters. Screen **height and position** affect comfort just as much, and this is where people go wrong.

You want your eyeline landing at roughly the vertical centre of the screen, or slightly below. In practice that usually means the bottom edge sits about 24 to 36 inches off the floor — though it depends on your seating height and screen size.

Mounting too high is one of the most common home cinema mistakes. It forces you to tilt your head back for two hours, and your neck will tell you about it.

When in doubt: lower.

## Matching the projector to the size

Your screen size determines how far back the projector has to sit, via the throw ratio:

**Throw distance = throw ratio × screen width**

A standard-throw projector at 1.5:1 filling a 100-inch screen (87 inches wide) needs about 130 inches — just under 11 feet. A short-throw or ultra short-throw model does the same job from much closer.

## One thing that changes which screen to buy

Size is only half the decision. The *surface* matters too, and it depends entirely on your room.

Dark room with light control? A standard matte white screen is the right answer — wider viewing angles, uniform brightness, no hotspotting.

## FAQ

**What size projector screen do I need for my room?** Multiply your seating distance in inches by 0.625 for a comfortable SMPTE size, or by 0.84 for an immersive THX size. At ten feet (120 inches) that gives roughly 75 to 100 inches, and most people are happiest around 100 inches at that distance.

**How far should I sit from a 100-inch projector screen?** Between about 10 and 13 feet. Ten feet gives an immersive THX 36-degree angle; 13 feet gives a comfortable SMPTE 30-degree angle. Closer than ten feet on a 100-inch screen starts to require head movement.

**What is the difference between SMPTE and THX screen size?** SMPTE targets a 30-degree viewing angle for comfortable, relaxed viewing suited to mixed use. THX targets 36 to 40 degrees for immersive, cinema-like viewing. THX produces a larger screen for the same seating distance.

**What are the dimensions of a 100-inch 16:9 screen?** 87 inches wide and 49 inches tall, before frame allowance. Width equals diagonal times 0.872 and height equals diagonal times 0.49 for any 16:9 screen.

**Does screen size affect which resolution I need?** Yes. At immersive THX distances on screens above about 80 inches, 4K is worth having because you sit close enough to see 1080p pixels. At comfortable SMPTE distances, 1080p resolves everything your eyes can distinguish.

**How high should I mount a projector screen?** So the centre of the image sits around eye level when seated, commonly with the bottom edge 24 to 36 inches off the floor. Mounting too high is a frequent mistake that causes neck strain over a full film.
