Skype to Shut Down in May 2025

Skype Is Retiring in May 2025: Move to Microsoft Teams

The way we connect has changed significantly over the years. To better serve users, Microsoft is retiring Skype on May 5, 2025, and shifting its focus to Microsoft Teams (free)—a modern communication and collaboration platform.

Why Move to Microsoft Teams?

Teams includes many of Skype’s core features, such as messaging, one-on-one and group calls, and file sharing. It also offers additional benefits like meeting hosting, calendar management, and community-building. Millions already use Teams to stay connected at work, school, and home.

Your Options as a Skype User

  1. Switch to Teams for free – You can now log into Teams using your Skype credentials, with all your chats and contacts carried over. During the transition, Skype and Teams users can continue to call and message each other.
  2. Export your Skype data – If you prefer not to migrate, you can download your chats, contacts, and call history before Skype shuts down.

Changes to Paid Skype Services

  • New customers can no longer purchase Skype Credit or subscriptions.
  • Existing subscriptions and Skype Credit will remain valid until their next renewal.
  • After May 5, 2025, Skype Dial Pad will be available for paid users via the Skype web portal and Teams.
