The old rule was simple. Under 80 inches, buy a TV. Over it, buy a projector.
That rule is dead, and following it will cost you money.
Here’s what changed: big panels got cheap. A 98-inch TCL QM6K launched at $3,499 and has since been spotted under $1,800. Hisense sells the U7SG at 100 inches, and at 116 inches if your budget is unusual. Screen sizes that were projector-only three years ago now sit in a TV showroom — often for less than a projector plus a decent screen.
So the honest 2026 answer is more interesting than the old rule.
One question settles most of this
Before any spec comparison: how much control do you have over light in the room?
A projector makes an image by bouncing light off a surface. Ambient light lands on that same surface and washes it out, because a projector can’t make your screen darker than the room. A TV emits its own light and just overpowers the room.
Blackout curtains, or you mostly watch after dark? A projector’s genuinely on the table.
Big windows, white walls, daytime viewing? Buy a TV. No amount of lumens fully fixes this, and people who ignore it end up disappointed with an expensive projector.

The 2026 price reality
Real numbers, because this is where the old advice falls apart.

Look at the 98-inch row. That’s where the two technologies now collide directly — and that row didn’t exist a few years ago.
One thing the table understates: the projector column. A projector needs a screen, and in any room with light it needs an ambient light rejecting screen, which is a few hundred dollars minimum. Budget for it. Projecting onto a white wall works, but you’ll lose contrast and the wall texture shows.
Where TVs win
Brightness and HDR. Not close. A modern Mini-LED or OLED produces highlights a projector can’t approach — the Samsung S90H measures around 2,450 nits on small HDR windows. Projectors spread lumens across a big surface, which is a fundamentally dimmer proposition. HDR content genuinely looks better on a good TV.
You just turn it on. No warm-up, no screen, no throw calculations, no keystone, no ceiling mount. This matters more than enthusiasts admit. A TV that works instantly gets used. A projector that needs ten minutes of fiddling gets used less.
Daytime and casual viewing. Saturday afternoon sport. News over breakfast. Background telly. Projectors are bad at all of it.
Built-in audio is actually usable. Not great, but a 50W 2.1.2 array on something like the U7SG carries a room. Projector speakers are almost universally rubbish — partly because the thing is behind you or on the ceiling.
Where projectors win
Scale past 110 inches. Consumer TVs basically stop there. Projectors keep going to 300. If you want a genuinely cinematic image, this is the only route — and a 130-inch picture is different in kind, not just degree.
Cost per inch at big sizes. At 120 inches and up, projection is dramatically cheaper. There’s no 150-inch TV at any sane price.
It disappears. A 98-inch TV is a big black rectangle dominating your room permanently. A projector with a retractable screen vanishes when you’re not watching. For a living room that isn’t a dedicated media space, that’s a real quality-of-life win.
No burn-in. OLED can retain static elements — news tickers, channel logos, game HUDs — over long exposure. Modern sets handle it well, but the risk isn’t zero. Projectors just don’t have that failure mode.
Easier on the eyes. Projected images reach you as light bounced off a surface, not fired directly at you. Plenty of people find long sessions more comfortable. Subjective, sure — but it comes up consistently from people who own both.
Laser longevity. 20,000 to 30,000 hours before brightness halves. Over a decade at four hours a day, with no lamp to replace.
Size vs where you sit
Screen size only means anything relative to seating distance. Quick rule: divide your seating distance in inches by 1.6.
- 8 feet (96″) → around 60 inches
- 10 feet (120″) → around 75 inches
- 12 feet (144″) → around 90 inches
- 14 feet (168″) → around 105 inches
Notice what that implies. Unless you sit more than about twelve feet back, a 98-inch TV is already bigger than the guideline suggests. And the case for a 150-inch projected image assumes a room deep enough to sit back from it — which a lot of living rooms simply aren’t.

What it really costs
Sticker price isn’t the whole story on either side.
A projector setup needs: the projector, a screen (ALR if there’s any light, several hundred dollars), a mount or stable surface, cable routing if you ceiling-mount it, and almost certainly external audio.
A TV setup needs: the TV, a stand or wall mount, and ideally a soundbar — though the built-in audio is at least tolerable.

So which do you buy?
Buy a TV if: your room has uncontrolled light, you watch during the day, you want something that just works, HDR quality matters to you, or you sit within about ten feet of the screen.
Buy a projector if: you can darken the room, you want more than 110 inches, you sit twelve feet or more back, you want the screen gone when you’re not watching, or you’re chasing a real cinema feel.

Is a projector better than a TV for movie nights? In a room you can darken, at sizes above about 110 inches, yes — nothing else delivers that scale at a sane price. In a room with ambient light, or below 100 inches, a modern TV is the better buy on brightness, HDR, and convenience.
At what screen size does a projector become the better value? Around 110 to 120 inches. Below that, large TVs have become cheap enough to compete directly — a 98-inch panel now sells for less than many projector-plus-screen setups. Above 120 inches, projection is the only realistic option.
Do I need a projector screen, or can I use a wall? A smooth white wall works and many people start there. You will lose contrast and any wall texture will show in the image. In a room with ambient light, an ambient light rejecting screen is close to essential and is the difference between a washed-out picture and the one you paid for.
Are projectors better for your eyes? Many people find reflected light more comfortable than light emitted directly at them, particularly over long sessions. It is subjective and not strongly evidenced, but it is reported consistently by people who own both.
