Heavy Lake-Effect Snow Brings Winter Storm Warnings and Travel Issues
Winter Storm Warning SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WSBT) — Heavy lake-effect snow is causing significant travel disruptions, particularly along the I-94 corridor. Multiple traffic accidents have been reported from Van Buren County to Stevensville in Berrien County.
The National Weather Service has issued Winter Storm Warnings for:
- Berrien and Cass Counties, Michigan: From 10 a.m. Monday to 10 a.m. Tuesday.
- St. Joseph County, Indiana: From 3 p.m. Monday to 10 a.m. Tuesday.
A Winter Weather Advisory is also in effect for:
- Elkhart and LaPorte Counties, Indiana, and St. Joseph County, Michigan: From 3 p.m. Monday to 10 a.m. Tuesday.
Snowfall began lightly on Monday morning but is expected to intensify throughout the afternoon. Overnight, a heavy snow band is forecast to form, stretching from southwest Michigan across the Indiana state line. This band could linger and shift slightly through Monday night into early Tuesday, potentially dropping significant snow totals.
Parts of Berrien and Cass Counties may receive 8 inches or more of snow by Tuesday morning, while most areas will see 4–6 inches. Regions farther south are expected to receive lighter snow accumulations.
Travel is likely to be impacted, especially during the Tuesday morning commute. Roads may become snow-covered and slick, making driving hazardous. Motorists are urged to exercise caution and allow extra time for travel.
Snowfall will begin to taper off late Tuesday morning, leaving behind cold air. Temperatures on Tuesday are expected to peak around freezing, with chilly conditions continuing throughout the day.
