They accept the signal, then quietly downscale it or drop every second frame. You get the resolution you paid for, or the frame rate you paid for. Not both. They have a 1920 x 1080 chip that fires each frame several times with microscopic offsets, painting sub-pixel detail across the screen until it addresses 8.3 million pixels.
